An Analysis of the Relationship Between Student Performance on the National Teachers Examination and That on the Cooperative English Test, Form 1B, Reading

Alice Barter

Chicago State University

Thirty of 59 students tested earlier with the Cooperative English Test, Form 1B, Reading, were studied for possible relationships between their performances on the CET and that on the National Teachers Examination. Factors such as course grade, cumulative grade point average, and ethnic identification in relation to results on both examinations were among the 13 variables tested for significance. Results indicated that these students were less able readers than the lower quartile of college sophomores in the normative group, and that a student's performance on the NTE (Composite Score) was significantly related to all the other variables. There was a strong relationship between the reading abilities for a student and his score on the NTE.
