Why Do Educational Measurement Texts Omit the Cloze Procedure?James Cook University of North Queensland The cloze procedure has been used by educators for over twenty- five years to measure readability of materials and reading compre hension for both native English and English-second-language speaking students in a wide variety of educational contexts. The cloze procedure has also been used to construct standardized tests, and has generated a relatively large professional literature. Yet, the technique is not mentioned in educational measurement textbooks. Some possible reasons for this situation are examined.
