Psychometric Characteristics of the Test of Syntactic Abilities Screening Test

W. Todd Rogers

University of British Columbia

B.R. Clarke

University of British Columbia

The reliability, factorial complexity, and predictive validity of the Test of Syntactic Abilities Screening Test were determined from the responses of 131 mildly impaired (≤ 59 dB HTL), 122 severely impaired (60-89 db HTL), and 129 profoundly deaf (≥ 90 dB HTL) students, eight to 19 years of age and enrolled in school. Factor analyses, Cronbach's composite {alpha}, and the lack of differential validity revealed that the test was unifactorial, thereby limiting its use for profile analysis. However, use of the total score to discriminate among students is justified for both severely impaired and profoundly deaf students. The use of the test with mildly impaired students is more equivocal.
