Coefficients of Effective LengthSt. Louis Public Schools Coefficients of Effective Length (CEL's) derived from the Spear-man-Brown formula can be an effective tool in assessing the net worth of an altered measurement procedure. Under certain conditions, however, a validity CEL can produce highly misleading results. A modified coefficient is suggested for use when empirical studies indicate that underlying assumptions have been violated.
