A Unit-Free Index of Individual Consistency

Marshall B. Jones

The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Hershey

Individual consistency on a trait across situations and over temporal occasions is necessary if that trait is to be considered an aspect of personality. The correlation coefficient, however, between the trait in two situations or over two temporal occasions tells us only how closely the two measurements are associated "on the average." It does not tell us how consistent or inconsistent a particular individual is. The present paper concerns a unit-free index of trait consistency at the individual level. The index is comparable across traits and compares directly with the correlation coefficient.
