The Application of the Management Behavior Survey to the Measurement of Principal Leadership BehaviorsUniversity of Oregon
University of Southern California This paper reports on the application of Yukl's (1981) Management Behavior Survey in an educational setting (a sample of 47 elementary schools). The instrument is designed to tap 23 categories of managerial behavior. Detailed methodological information is provided. The purpose of this paper was to discuss three problems encountered with the instrument: (a) lack of response; (b) interrater disagreement; and (c) ceiling effects. In addition, the dimensionality of the measure was evaluated through factor analysis. This information should be valuable to researchers attempting to measure behavior reflecting leadership.
