Measuring Dyadic Perspective-Taking: Two Scales for Assessing Perspective-Taking in Marriage and Similar DyadsIndividual and Family Studies, Central Michigan University This article reports on the development and preliminary assessment of two paper-and-pencil measures of dyadic perspective-taking. Dyadic perspective-taking is defined as the imaginative tendency to put oneself in the place of a partner. The Self Dyadic Perspective-Taking Scale (SDPT) assesses the dyadic perspective-taking of self. The Other Dyadic Perspective-Taking Scale (ODPT) evaluates the dyadic perspective-taking of the other. Three separate studies evaluated the reliability and validity of the two measures. Results indicated that both scales had what could be considered adequate validity and reliability. Shortcomings, uses for the scales, and suggestions for future research were discussed.
