The Analysis of a Construct that Does not Exist: Misunderstanding the Multidimensional Nature of Trait AnxietyYork University
York University Davis and Cowles (1989) examined the relationship of trait anxiety and need for approval, to the use of computer administered scales. Unfortunately, they analyzed a total trait anxiety score on the Endler Multidimensional Anxiety Scales (EMAS)a unidimensional construct that this multidimensional measure does not assess. The Davis and Cowles data were reanalyzed using the appropriate scoring procedure for the EMAS. Individuals with a high need for social approval have a tendency to "fake good" only on particular dimensions of trait anxiety.
