Construction of a Nonverbal Adaptation of the Stanford-Binet Fourth Edition

The purpose of this investigation was to construct a nonverbal short form of the Stanford-Binet Fourth Edition (Binet 4) for use in the evaluation of hearing impaired, speech/language disabled, and limited English proficient children. Subtests were selected based on ratings of Binet 4 users. The subtests selected included Bead Memory, Pattern Analysis, Copying, Memory for Objects, and Matrices. The reliability coefficient for this new composite score was .95, and the validity of this composite, as estimated by its correlation with the test composite from the full battery, was .91. A procedure for generating estimated composites based on the Binet Nonverbal Scale is provided with a rationale for its use in clinical assessment practice.
