Construct Validity of Need for Achievement and Locus of Control Scales

Edward A. Ward

St. Cloud State University

The purpose of the present construct validation study was to assess the internal consistency, convergent and discriminant validity coefficients, and replicability of the factor structure of two previously validated measures of locus of control (LOC) and need for achievement (NACH). The scales were administered to 192 employed graduate students and 219 undergraduate students, all of whom were studying for degrees in business. Results indicated adequate internal consistency for the measures of LOC but not for those of NACH. Orthogonal or oblique rotation of the scales to the a priori number of factors did not consistently support the factor replicability of the scales. Convergent validity but not discriminant validity was shown for the measures of LOC and NACH.
